SYNOPSIS

At the ouset of the year 1910, Buenos Aires gets ready to celebrate the Argentine Independence Centenal. “The country is on its way up”, many say, and a promising future is expected.

This feeling is also shared by Doña Carlota García Dubourg, a true representative of local conservatism, who lives in a house in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, and who must look after four orphan grandchildren: Adela, Eugenia, Carmen and Hipólito. Due to this celebration, uncle Marcelo, Carlota’s son, together with José, son of the family gardener, return to Buenos Aires. The alter, now an important scenographer in Paris has been summoned by the Colon Theatre for the mise-en-scene of Rigotetto. Adela and José meet again after 15 years and fall prey of a passionate romance. Everything takes place in a paceful atmosphere but beneath the quietness of the summer afternoons, the problems of each of Carlota’s grandchildren are shaped. Carlota is planning a convenient marriage for Carmen while Eugenia has an affair with a wellborn writer, but Carlota will shatter their plans because he has published a book criticizing her social class.

On the other band, Hipólito has to enter into hospital continuosly, being deprived of love and sentenced by a terminal disease. Because of Carlota’s mind and that of the people at that time, the lovers are forced to sep their relationship secret. Until Adela, once she has yielded to fate and the dangers of these furtive encounters, learns abaout certain aspects of José’s life that will lead to the loss of stabilitty of the García Dubourg family.
